what we are up to: some year end news

just a brief run down of some of the projects that are keeping us here late at mzd headquarters as the year comes to a close.

A)the return of the mzd series. it's been on hiatus for about 6 months, but never fear, there will be two release before the year.

one, mzd05q3, aka berlin dreaming, is sort of an ode to the world of sleeparchive and other really great techno that is out at the moment. self imposed deadline is midnight, this coming sunday. tracks & remixes by artists such as: sleeparchive (duh), fairmont, swayzak, alex smoke, robag wruhme & the wighnomy bros., petter, john tejada, james holden, and many more.

two, mzd05q4, the christmas mix. bit of a change of pace for the mzd series here. it will be a mixed bag of tempos and styles. expect some mum, nathan fake, dextro, sigur ros, villalobos. all crystalline beats, and heartwarming melodies. music that feels like snow.

B)on the production front, its been a bumper crop the past few weeks. weeding out the good from the bad right now in preparation of sending out some demos. hope to post a mini live set and clips before new years. watch this space.

more to come.

09BC

Border Community's latest, Fairmont - Gazebo/Gazelle, once again delivers the goods. I can't say enough how good this quirky A side is. The melody sounds like it could almost derail, its so delicate. It's definitely not typical, it's almost wrong in a way (perhaps its slightly detuned), but it's so wrong, it's right. The bass line is one that will get the floor moving. And the breakdown introduces another sweeping pad that takes things up to another level. The B is just breathtakingly beautiful. It's so pretty it almost hurts. The hovering bassline that comes in during the breakdown is out of this world. I love the lfo action on it! And when that second pad comes in so beautifully you just wanna kinda explode. Border Community once again prove they are the best in the business. This is due out on November 25th, but I've spotted promos at the usual suspects like Juno and City16. Border Community isn't stopping there though. The following week, Nathan Fake drops a special 7" holiday single, with a modern take on 'Silent Night' while the B, 'Grandfathered' is taken from his forthcoming album, 'Drowning in a Sea of Love.' Like any BC release, run dont walk to get this before the shops are out.

chart time!

currently digging:

1)all things sleeparchive, but mainly:
Sleep Archive - Acd Bleep [Sleeparchive]
2)Sleep Archive - Dusty Galaxies [Sleeparchive]
3)Petter - Robot Food [Manual]
4)Vincent Oliver - Lovely Boots (Oh My) [vincentoliver.co.uk]
5)Farimont - Gazebo [Border Community]
6)Fairmont - Gazelle [Border Community]
7)Alex Smoke - Lost In Sound (Casita Verde Mix) [Soma]
8)Modeselektor - Ziq Zaq [Bpitch Control]
9)Vector Lovers - Microtron (Alex Smoke's Micro Tron Gate Remix) [Soma]
10)Koerner & Treplec - Walk Don't Run [Milnormodern]

my sleeparchive obsession

sleeparchive are ace! I normally don't buy ultra minimal records, 'cause let's face it, they are often monotonous and quite frankly boring. Not so with sleeparchive. Favorite track: Acd Bleep from the Research EP. Close second: Dusty Galaxies from the Infared Glow EP. This track has a metope-ian relentless throbbing bassline and just plain BOSS attitude, with james holden like percussion and deft editing touches. Check here for more info and samples.

James Holden @ Soundbar October 21,2005

Friday night was phenomenal. James was absolutely on fire and by the end of the night everyone was going absolutely mental.

Before the evening began, I spotted James and handed him my demo. It was kind of a lame transaction though so hopefully he heard what I said and indeed will take the time to listen to it.

Paolo Mojo opened up things upstairs but was really uninteresting overall. The best track he played was his last, the Michael Mayer Remix of Ada's "Maps." (A remix of a cover!) This lead into James' set.

Let me start out by saying that the bass was up way too high on the main floor's system. A lot of times it muddied up the midrange and any melody present in the track(s). This little flaw actually though played a big part into what might have been my favorite part of the night, James' second track, Pier Bucci's "L'Nuit" (Crosstown Rebels). Words can not describe how awesome this was. The hauntingly beautiful female vocals and beats just erupt into a wave of continuous bass that is so unrelenting that the pressure is practically numbing. I've never experienced anything like it. Other highlights included the rockin Phones' 12" remix of Tom Vek's "I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes", which lead so nice into Holden's remix of Andre Kraml's smash, "Safari." The new Agoria remix of Huggotron was full on blinding Techno. The new Border Community release, Fairmont - Gazebo was outstanding. I didnt realize how well it would work in a club, it was killer. And getting to hear Holden's forthcoming "Lump" live was a dream come true. Two and half hours of the rcknist techno. ever.

Tracks I spotted:

Pier Bucci - L'Nuit [Crosstown Rebels]
Nylon - The Mouse [RebelOne]
Alex Smoke - Sortie [Vakant]
Avus - Fancy Arse (James Holden Midnight Extension) [Perc Trax]
Plastikman - Glob [Plus 8]
*Franz Ferdinand - Do You Want To (Erol Alkan Remix) [Domino]
Andre Kraml - Safari (James Holden Remix) [Crosstown Rebels]
Huggotron - Pop It Bad (Agoria Remix) [Craft Music]
Holden - A Break In The Clouds (Beats Tool) [Border Community]
Holden - Lump [Border Community]
System7 - Planet7 (James Holden Remix) [A-Wave Records]
Nathan Fake - Dinamo (Dominik Eulberg Remix) [Traum]
Britney - Breathe On Me (James Holden Dub) [white]
Metope - Test Crash [Sender]
Extrawelt - Soopertrack [Border Community]
Fairmont - Gazebo [Border Community]
Paul Kalkbrenner - Gubruenn Gubruenn [BPitch Control]
Alter Ego - Daktari (Robag Wruhme Remix)
AFX - VBS.Redlof.B (Analord 11) [Rephlex]

* is actuallly Tom Vek - I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes (Phones 12" Mix) [Tummy Touch]
